    Antenna Masts
Here is an idea the OH-5 team uses. In looking for a good portable extension mast that would not take up much room, we found a great fit. We found that Lowes builders supply had magnesium extension handles for trowling and painting. These pieces were found in two sizes, 1 inch by 5 foot and 1.5 inch by 6 foot. They screw together regardless of size, are sturdy, and extend to as many pieces as you wish to screw together. We use two 6 footers and one 5 footer screwed together to make a nice 17 foot antenna mast. Cost is under $20 a section.

Cellular Phone - Data circuit time out problems
Some cellular data systems fail during peak use times due to built in time out of the data system should no data be transfered over a period of time. Try seting up a ping to a known good IP address and use the -t switch to activate repetitive pings.  This should help keep the cellular circuit alive for your data use.  Use the following format:
    ping www.url.com -t

    NTIA Standards
The NTIA has upgraded specifications for all radios used on government bands.  Recently FEMA has mandated all participants in SHARES on FEMA frequencies will comply with NTIA specifications.  Below you will find resources to help with understanding the new requirements and in determining whether your equipment meets the new NTIA standards.

    Long Distance Phone Calls
NDMS allows $3 per day for personal calls. At standard long distance and calling card rates, you won't get much time on the line at that rate. However, there are companies that allow prepaid long distance calling at 2.9 cents a minute. That means for $3 a day you would get over an hour and a half calling time!  Try One Suite, one of these companies. You also get online tracking of all of your calls. The system works just like a calling card, but you can recharge the card online. Found this one courtesy of Clark Howard.

    Power Distribution
West Mountain Radio has developed several nice DC power distribution devices using the Power Pole connector technology.  This system is fused and has LED lights that indicate a blown fuse. West Mountain can be found at:   http://www.westmountainradio.com/
