Joint spring training for OH-5, OH-1, OH-6, MI-1, PA-1, and
PA-3 conducted and hosted in Toledo by DMAT OH-1. This two day event contained
training in basic field operations as well as advanced medical topics and
culminated in a drill with other organizations from the city of Toledo.
Members Involved
47 members from OH-5 attended from all branches of the
team.
Activity History
Thursday, May 29 – We loaded our rental truck at around
5:00 p.m. at the new warehouse.
Setting up our six tents.
Friday, May 30 – The advanced party met at our warehouse
and left around 3:30 P.M. The advanced parties goal was to take the
equipment up to Toledo to get a head start on setting up tents before darkness
came and as it turned out, before the rains began to fall.
At 6 p.m. the second main group left in rental vans, stopping
briefly in Sidney at Wilson Memorial Hospital to pick up members who live
in that region.
A camp of more than 14 Western Shelter tents was soon
sheltering all.
Tent setup continues.
That evening the OH-5 and some of the other teams members
camped over night in the tents while the rains intensified and continued
most of the night into the next morning. It reminded some of our
spring training of 2002 except in this case we were fortunate enough not
to have lightning.
Ah, food.....
Saturday, after a quick continental breakfast, sessions began
at the Medical College of Ohio. The first speaker was the Dr. Kevin
Yeskey, NDMS Chief Medical Officer, who outlined NDMS future goals and
plans.
The rain ended by noon, much to everyone's relief, but
temperatures began to fall through the afternoon. Two formal tracks
of sessions were developed for the afternoon that included medical and
deployment issues.
The Classroom
Special suturing sessions were given to medical personnel.
Night brought winds and an over night temperature measured
by some of around 35 degrees. Cold for a June 1. No frost, but the
experience shows how one needs to be ready for anything during a deploy.
Communications members had their own training track in the afternoon.
Sunday, after another quick breakfast, many of the teams
sent members to participate in the Toledo hazmat drill. Three strike
teams were formed with DMAT members and the rest of the participants were
used as victims.
150 victims are transported to 5 area hospitals using 3
busses.
Yes, we're open for business! Come in.
Greg gets one of the few showers of the weekend.
Wonder if they scrubbed behind his ears?
The team broke down the camp during the afternoon and
arrived home in Dayton to unload their equipment around 5 PM. Equipment
was then unloaded and stored back into our warehouse in 27 minutes to await
our next outing.
The groups ready to head home.
It was great having so many hands helping out to
make the job easier.
