Event
The 2003 Vectren Dayton Air Show, July 17 - 20.  This years show was expanded to 4 days from the usual 2 day show in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first flight of the Wright brothers. This "world's largest air show" event had an unofficial estimate of more than 160,000 people attending.

Members Involved
Around 50 members from almost all specialty areas participated. In addition to our own team members, we had members from KY-1, OH-1, and OH-6 as well as physicians from the emergency resident program from Wright State University. Also working close with us were rescue squads from various communities.

Activity History
This year we set up our main medical area on Wednesday.  The team had three points of presence at the show. We had two medical stations and a communications trailer staffed by our members. One medical tent was located within the south air show exhibition area while the second medical station was set up at the usual site in the south parking lot next to the bus loading area.

Above is the interior of our med tent.  Full insulation was used to keep the sun's heat out and the cool in.

Fortunately this year saw mild summer temperatures so heat related problems were reduced. Despite this several patients were seen for a variety of reasons and some transported on to hospitals for additional care.

Fueling the generators. We made use of the litter bus to block most the generator sounds from the camp. This technique produced a very livable and enjoyable compound.

Between patients, the team relaxes by watching the show.

The team ran a mist tent for those leaving the heat of the air show. The tent was set up by the VA hospital personnel.

Meals were Mmmmm good again this year thanks to our meal planners and cooks who helped out.  A second Western Shelter tent was used for food distribution and general hangout in the shade. We used two sets of screens on the sides and insulated the roof to eliminate the heat from radiating through.

Above, the communications area at the compound. Here batteries are charged, radios are programmed and internet access was available to check the weather and for members to use email. The team also ran medical communications for the air show from a communications van near the fire house.

Washington TWP loaned us their field "Gator" to transport personnel and food to the several locations we manned.

Above, for the first time the team medical tent was equipped with air conditioning.  Although the temperature was brought down by ten degrees, we believe we can improve the system next year by using insulated ducting.  The black (heat absorbing) plastic NDMS ductwork was designed for our furnaces, not air conditioning.  Thanks to KMC for this addition.

Above, the team quickly carries a visitor who collapsed in the parking lot in front of the DMAT compound.   The incident is of special interest to the team and team members who were present.
