Event:
Vectren Dayton Air Show July 20 and 21.
Members Participating:
Approximately 31 members participated this year. The
member mix included 5 logistics, 2 administration, 7 communications, 2
physicians, 6 RN and 9 EMT. Other non-DMAT OH-5 helpers also came this
year to help staff the weekend. This included a team member from KY-1 DMAT,
rescue squads, and other physicians.
History:
The team met at the DMAT storage area around noon on
Friday July 19 to assemble tents and equipment. Upon arrival at the
Airport, the group waited out a rain storm and then put up the tents, departing
the site around 6:30 PM. Three tents were used to make the Base of Operations
consisting of a 20 foot octagon and two 35 foot shelters.

With the heat, hitting 90 degrees and the humidity high, the use of screens and opened sides on the tents was dictated.
Throughout Saturday, the team saw a trickle of patients. However, late Saturday afternoon the heat took its toll on Air Show visitors. Many victims started showing up that eventually need transported to hospitals. At one point four patients were being staged for transfer to hospitals while at the same time others with minor needs were also being cared for. Below are typical scenes from Saturday and Sunday's medical responses.

Squads from different cities transported victims to various hospitals in the region. Unfortunately, the closest hospital started re-routing patients to other hospitals Sunday afternoon which slowed the return of the squads back to the Air Show. An accident on the main interstate additionally slow the progress of squads.

Following the transport of a patient, review and documentation completion is conducted by the team participants which includes the EMTs, Nurses and Doctors involved.

While documentation is being completed, clean-up and preparations for additional patients is conducted.

A fine lunch on both days was again prepared by the logistics crew. Lunch, shown below, consisted of grilled burgers and hot dogs and included all the trimmings. Drinks were served all day as liquids quickly evaporated in the form of sweat in the 90+ degree temperatures.

The communications group took on the Air Show dispatch function for the first time on Sunday in an attempt to implement needed tracking of medical resources. While four DMAT communications members were involved in the Air Show dispatch center provided by P & R Communications, a couple of radio opperators manned the team communications center back at camp. One such Commo is seen below awaiting radio traffic.

Although still a very warm weekend, the insulated tent roofs were an improvement over last years operation. DMAT served the public and learned valuable information at the same time through its participation in the Air Show this year.
